New Therapist Brendan Cole
We would like to warmly welcome the newest member of the Evolve team Olympian Brendan Cole. Brendan is not only an Olympian, representing Australia at the London Olympics in Track and Field, he is a Commonwealth games Gold Medalist! He joins Evolve bringing his 20 years plus experience as a remedial and sports massage therapist and Pilates Instructor. He uses a range of soft tissue techniques, including deep tissue, trigger point, myofascial dry needling (MDN), myofascial release, active release and electro-stim needling.
With a particular focus on exercise, movement, and sport, Brendan has supported Athletics Australia, Netball Australia, USA Bobsled/Skeleton, the Australian Institute of Sport, and Gymnastics Australia.
We caught up with Brendan to ask some more about his back ground and incredible achievements.
Tell us a bit about your background, where you are from and how you came to Byron Bay?
Born in north Queensland, I grew up in Melbourne and loved movement, sport and working with people from a young age. As an athlete and therapist, I was able to study in some incredible environments, under mentors which led me to North America, Europe and Australia. Recently, I was in living in Canada and the USA, working with the Olympic US bobsled and skeleton teams, and athletics. I decided to swap the mountains for the beach, and the bobsled for a surfboard!
What are you passionate about with Remedial Massage Therapy and Pilates and how do you feel your experience as an elite athlete helps towards this kind of work?
As a therapist, I often saw problems that came from poor movement patterns and mechanics. I would often see athletes for the same issues over and over again, realising that great health was a combination of quality therapy and effective movement. This led me to study pilates, strength and conditioning, and movement coaching to compliment my hands on work. The combination of these has led to a passion for helping people move better and celebrate the body they have.
Winning the Gold Medal for Australia in the Mens 4 × 400 metres track relay team at the 2010 Commonwealth Games must have been a career highlight! What other achievements would you consider your favourite?
It was definitely the most fun I have had on the track! Representing Australia at the Olympics in London as a 400m hurdler, to then also be selected for the 4x400 relay was also really special. I competed and won Nationals for the first time in a decade this year in the Masters category, which was so much fun without the pressures of elite athletics.
What are some activities you enjoy doing outside of Professional life?
I love music, and still DJ occasionally. Give me the outdoors, some good company, a great hike, or an engrossing book, and I am a very happy camper. Meditation, breath-work, and strong community connections all fuel me.
Brendan Will be available for Bookings Initially Monday 1-5pm and Thursday 10-1pm. Pilates Classes TBA.
